With such a significant portion of the population online, how can India enhance digital literacy and privacy awareness to ensure individuals are informed about their data rights and the implications of their online activities?
As of 2023, India boasts over 820 million active internet users, making it one of the largest online populations globally. Interestingly, rural India accounts for 53% of this user base, showcasing the rapid digital penetration into previously underserved areas.
However, a study by PwC India reveals a startling gap: only 16% of Indian internet users are aware of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act and its implications. Even more concerning, 69% of users remain unaware of their fundamental right to withdraw consent for the use of their personal data.
